A process in which a dog learns "what works." Behaviors that reliably produce a desirable consequence increase in frequency, while behaviors that produce an undesirable consequence (or fail to produce a desired one) decrease.

Operant conditioning is organized into four quadrants: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. Together, these describe all the ways consequences can shape behavior.
