Night Walks: Comfortable in the Dark
Confidence Building ยท 15 steps ยท by @fearfuldogs
Your Dog will learn to **head out the door and walk calmly after dark**, starting on a lit porch at dusk and building to a relaxed 10-minute walk at night on Let's go.
**How this plan works:** this is a feelings plan, not an obedience plan. Most steps are Classical, so one worried rep drops back to an easier step on its own. That's the plan protecting Your Dog, not a setback.
**The rules that make it work:** - **Home is always available.** The door stays open behind you, and turning back is always allowed. Never pull, drag, carry, or lure Your Dog out into the dark. A dog who knows they can leave can afford to stay. - **Food goes on the ground where Your Dog already is**, or back toward the house. Don't hold treats out ahead to tempt them further into the dark. - **Turn home before Your Dog asks to.** Ending while they're still relaxed is what builds the next evening. - **Eating isn't the same as being okay.** Watch for a tucked tail, low body, freezing, scanning, or pulling toward the door. If you see those, the rep is a fail even if they took the treat. - **Short sessions:** one or two sets an evening is plenty.
**While you train:** don't undo the work on late-night potty trips. Go out at dusk while you still can, keep the porch and yard lights on, and stay close for those trips. They don't count as reps.
**Check first:** if the fear of the dark started suddenly, or Your Dog is older, get a vet check. Failing night vision (cataracts, retinal disease) and pain are common hidden reasons a dog stops wanting to go out at night.
Training steps
Doorway at dusk, lights on
Setup: Around sunset, porch light on, front door open. You sit just inside the doorway. Your Dog is loose indoors and free to come over or leave.
Each time Your Dog glances or wanders over toward the open door, drop a treat on the floor next to you. Don't call or coax. If they walk away, let them. Each treat for a look outside is one rep.
Success: Loose body, takes treats easily, looks outside with a soft or curious face.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Choose to step onto the porch
Setup: Dusk, porch light on, door open behind you. You sit on the porch or stoop. Your Dog is inside or at the threshold, free to stay in.
Wait. When Your Dog steps out on their own, say 'yes' and toss a treat back INSIDE the door, so going home pays too. Let them come back out whenever they're ready. Never hold food out to bring them out.
Success: Your Dog steps out onto the porch on their own.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Hang out on the porch, light on
Setup: Dusk, porch light on, door open. Your Dog on harness and loose leash beside you on the porch.
Spend about 30 seconds together on the porch, scattering a treat on the ground every few seconds. Let them sniff and look around. Then go inside together. Each 30-second hangout is one rep.
Success: Relaxed, eats, sniffs, looks around with ears and tail at their normal height.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Three steps off the porch, light on
Setup: Dusk, porch light on, door open, Your Dog on harness and loose leash.
Walk three steps off the porch, scatter a treat, turn back and go inside together. If Your Dog stops, stop with them and turn home. That's information, not a fail to push through.
Success: Comes along on a loose leash, eats, body relaxed.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Short loop in the porch light
Setup: Dusk, porch light on, door open, Your Dog on harness and loose leash.
Say 'Let's go' and walk to the edge of the lit area, about 10 steps. Scatter a treat, then walk home. Each out-and-back is one rep.
Success: Loose leash, sniffing or looking around, eats the scatter, relaxed walk home (not a rush).
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Doorway with the porch light off
Setup: After dusk, porch light OFF, door open with the house lights behind you. You sit in the doorway.
Same as the first step, but now with the porch light off. Drop a treat each time Your Dog looks out into the dim yard. They're free to leave.
Success: Loose body, eats, looks out calmly.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Porch with the light off
Setup: After dusk, porch light OFF, door open with house light behind. Your Dog on harness and loose leash beside you on the porch.
Hang out for about 30 seconds, scattering treats every few seconds, then go inside together. Each hangout is one rep.
Success: Relaxed, eats, sniffs, looks around normally.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Three steps into the dark
Setup: After dark, porch light off, door open. Flashlight aimed at the ground just ahead. Loose leash.
Walk three steps off the porch, scatter a treat in the flashlight beam, turn back and go inside together.
Success: Comes along easily, eats, body relaxed.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
To the end of the driveway in the dark
Setup: After dark, porch light off, door open. Flashlight aimed at the ground ahead. Loose leash.
Say 'Let's go' and walk to the end of the driveway or front path. Scatter a treat in the beam and walk home. Each out-and-back is one rep.
Success: Loose leash, sniffing, eats, relaxed walk home.
Advance on: 4 of 5 successes
Past one house and back
Setup: After dark, flashlight aimed ahead, loose leash. Pick the quietest direction.
Say 'Let's go', walk past one house, scatter a treat or two, and turn home. Pay a couple of times on the way back too. Each out-and-back is one rep.
Success: Walks with you on a loose leash, sniffs, eats, and the tail and ears stay at their normal height.
Advance on: 2 of 3 successes
One-minute out and back
Setup: After dark, flashlight aimed ahead, loose leash, the quiet route.
Walk about one minute out, treating every so often as you go, then turn home.
Success: Relaxed walk, sniffing, eats.
Advance on: 2 of 3 successes
Three-minute out and back
Setup: After dark, flashlight aimed ahead, loose leash, the quiet route.
Say 'Let's go' and walk about 3 minutes out. Scatter a treat now and then, and let Your Dog sniff. Turn home while they're still happy. Each out-and-back is one rep. You can spread a set across evenings.
Success: Normal walking pace, loose leash, sniffing, eats when offered.
Advance on: 2 of 3 successes
Flashlight off, streetlights only
Setup: After dark, on a route with some streetlight or house light. Flashlight in your pocket.
Same 3-minute out and back, now without the flashlight beam. Keep paying along the way.
Success: Same relaxed walk as with the flashlight.
Advance on: 2 of 3 successes
New route after dark
Setup: After dark, flashlight aimed ahead, a different street or direction than usual.
A 3-minute out and back on a route Your Dog hasn't walked at night. New sights and night noises are the challenge, so pay generously.
Success: Curious, sniffing, loose leash, eats.
Advance on: 2 of 3 successes
Ten-minute night walk
Setup: Full dark, the usual route, flashlight optional.
Say 'Let's go' and take a 10-minute walk: about 5 minutes out, 5 back. Treat now and then, especially at any spot that used to worry Your Dog. Each walk is one rep, so a set can span two evenings.
Success: Relaxed the whole way: sniffing, loose leash, normal tail and ears, eats.
Advance on: 2 of 2 successes
Your Dog can walk after dark now. Keep it that way: take a night walk now and then even when you don't need to, carry treats for the first minute or two, and bring the flashlight back whenever a new route, a new season, or a scare makes things harder. If one evening goes badly (a loud bang, a loose dog), drop back a few steps for a session or two. Fear comes back fast and goes away again fast if you let the plan catch it.
